5 Tips for Living with a Hormonal Parrot

Michelle Beckley • Apr 03, 2023

Important all year but especially during Spring!

Hormonal parrots are a common problem among pet bird owners. These birds can become easily agitated and act out in ways that can be difficult to manage. But it doesn’t have to be like this! With the right tips and tricks, you can keep your hormonal parrot under control and make sure that both you and your feathered friend get along just fine. Here are five helpful tips for living with a hormonal parrot.

1. Be Patient – Parrots, like humans, can be unpredictable at times, so it’s important to stay patient when dealing with them. Don’t respond angrily or harshly if they do something wrong—instead, take a step back and assess the situation before responding in any way. You may find that simply giving them some space is enough to calm them down.

2. Establish Boundaries – Just as you would with any pet, it’s important to establish boundaries with your parrot early on so that they know what behavior is expected of them. Let them know which areas of the house are off limits and which behaviors will not be tolerated. Make sure to provide positive reinforcement when they behave appropriately so that they are more likely to repeat those behaviors in the future.

3. Provide Stimulation – Boredom is one of the biggest factors when it comes to hormonal parrots acting out, so make sure you provide plenty of stimulating activities for them to enjoy on a daily basis. Give them plenty of toys for playtime, provide new perches for exploring, or set up an obstacle course for them to fly around each day—your bird will love all of these activities (and so will you!).

4. Spend Time Together – Spending quality time together is one of the best things you can do to help calm down a hormonal parrot. Talk or sing softly while grooming their feathers, offer treats as rewards for good behavior, or even just sit quietly together in the same room—these simple acts will go a long way towards helping your parrot feel secure and loved!

5. Seek Professional Help – If all else fails and your parrot is still exhibiting problematic behavior despite all your efforts, don’t hesitate to seek professional help from one of Kookaburra's certified bird trainers who can give you more specific advice tailored to your individual situation.
