Kookaburra Bird Shop, LLC a été créée en 1979 par Terrie Beckley. Le magasin a commencé comme une animalerie complète qui vendait des oiseaux apprivoisés bien ajustés. À cette époque, les oiseaux élevés à la main élevés au Canada n'étaient pas disponibles. Terrie se rendrait personnellement aux stations de quarantaine d'où venaient les oiseaux importés et cueillait à la main des jeunes oiseaux qu'elle apprivoiserait ensuite avec soin et patience. Ses oiseaux s'asseyaient dans une aire de jeux et laissaient le grand public les manipuler. Bien que ce ne soit pas inhabituel maintenant, c'était du jamais vu en 1979. Terrie a été une pionnière de son temps.
As soon as domestically bred hand fed parrots became available in the early 1980s, that is all Kookaburra Bird Shop sold. It was the first shop in the Dallas Fort Worth area to sell domestically raised hand fed baby parrots. As her business grew, Terrie expanded her shop to its current location.
 
 Kookaburra Bird Shop is housed in its own building of approximately 4,000 square feet dedicated solely to the welfare of pet birds. As Terrie was building her bird business, her daughter, Michelle Beckley, could not get birds out of her system. Michelle received a BS degree from Texas A&M in Biomedical Science then continued with jobs in the pet industry with a distributer and manufacturer of bird related items.

Armed with both experience and knowledge Michelle took over ownership of Kookaburra Bird Shop in 2003. She has since computerized the daily business of the shop and continued with her mother’s primary goal of helping people find the right birds for their lifestyles. It is Kookaburra Bird Shop’s primary goal that all it’s birds find long term loving homes.
